Foster A Child In State Custody

Join a team that's dedicated to protecting children and supporting families!

What Foster Parents Do

They help make sure children are safe and well cared for while they can’t be at home, and support the parents as they work towards safely reunifying with their children.

An Ongoing Need

We always need more foster families in Vermont, especially those who can care for:

  • Infants, toddlers & teenagers
  • Sibling groups
  • Children with complex medical or developmental needs
  • Youth who identify as LGBTQ
  • Children who need short-term, urgent care
  • Teens transitioning from residential care back to the community

Who Can Apply

You can be single, married, living with a partner, or joined through a civil union. You MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Meet the licensing requirements for foster homes in Vermont.

You can apply to provide foster care for a specific child you know or any child in need.

Learn More Before You Apply

  1. Read Provide Foster Care to learn about the licensing process and supports available.
  2. Read Provide Respite Care if you're interested but not quite ready to do foster care.

Get The Process Started

  1. Complete this short Foster Care Inquiry Form and someone will reach out to you. OR
  2. Call your local Family Services District Office and ask for the Resource Coordinator.

The more qualified foster families we have in every community, the easier it is to keep children and youth in their own communities and schools.
