cooking dinnerThe Emergency / General Assistance Program helps individuals and families with their emergency basic needs, including housing (e.g., back rent, temporary housing, security deposit), utilities, food, and burial costs.

Who is Eligible

Eligibility is based on low income.

How It Works

You can choose to receive General Assistance through direct deposit or an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card (called Vermont Express).

  • Get general information about Emergency/General Assistance and other programs;
  • Order an application form;
  • Get specific information about your case, including the status of your application and benefit details;and
  • Speak to a Customer Service Agent — weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
