Donated Food Section

The Child Development Division Donated Food Section administers various United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) commodity food programs for Vermont. Through these programs, food is distributed to facilities participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), Charitable Institution Program (CI), and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).

Schools, child and adult care programs, and summer feeding programs are eligible for the commodity programs if they are participating in the federal nutrition programs. If an organization would like more info on the federal nutrition programs, please contact the Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Programs at 802-828-2447 or visit their website at http://www.state.vt.us/educ/nutrition/index.htm.

Households are eligible for TEFAP commodities if they are within federal income eligibility criteria. Organizations providing prepared meals may also be eligible to receive these commodities if they serve predominately needy persons. If individuals, food shelves or other organizations would like more information on this program, please contact the Vermont Foodbank at 800-585-2265.

Another USDA commodity program for individuals in Vermont is the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. This program is administered by the Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living.
