The Application Process

The process described below is for people applying to adopt waiting children. If you're adopting your foster child, the process will be slightly different and you'll be assigned a worker to guide you through the process.

Step 1 - Apply To Project Family —a partnership between DCF and Lund

If you live out of state:
  1. Complete the Project Family Registration Form.
  2. Mail your completed form, along with a copy of your adoption homestudy, to the address on the form.

If you live in Vermont and have a current, approved adoption homestudy or foster care license:
  1. Complete the Project Family Registration Form.
  2. Mail your completed form, along with a copy of your adoption homestudy or letter confirming your foster care license, to the address on the form.
If you live in Vermont, want to adopt a child in Vermont foster care, and need an adoption homestudy:
  1. Complete the Project Family Application Form. (We may do your homestudy for free but it will remain our property and be restricted to the adoption of a child in Vermont foster care.)
  2. Mail your completed form to the address on the form.

Step 2 - Attend Training

All families adopting children in DCF custody will be required to complete our adoptive parent training before their adoptions are finalized. It is designed to help you gain the knowledge and skills you'll need to successfully parent an adopted child, covering topics such as:

  • Parenting an adopted child;
  • Child development, attachment and adoption;
  • Success, challenges, and interventions;
  • Identity development and adoption; and
  • Looking towards the future.

Step 3 - Wait For A Match

How soon a match is made will largely depend on how flexible you are in terms of the age, gender, and special needs of the children you will accept.

You can also search our list of waiting children. If you are interested in a particular child, contact the child's worker to let them know.
